This morning when I woke up and checked my email, I had very exciting news that my Toto knits order was complete and winging it’s way over from Kenya.

Let me tell you a little bit about these amazing clothes and the Toto Knits business… Toto Knits is a line of organic cotton knitwear ethically made by a group of single mothers in Kenya. A child friendly workspace is provided, or the knitters are able to work from home, with knitters paid per piece which allows as much flexibility as they need. Each piece is made by hand and signed by the knitter. Yep, I’m sure all Mums who are juggle any work commitments can appreciate the flexibility thing!
A number of designers have put together the clothing ranges- here are a few of the initial pieces that I have ordered for Moon Unit, with a few colour changes to the pictures you see here:

I ordered a few samples for my young Josie and the impending new Moon Unit and was very impressed by the quality and fit.I can’t wait for them to arrive!

What with moving house, pregnancy, toddler and life in general but Moon Unit has been ticking along with regular appearances at the Cygnet Market, the online store and some new retail outlets around Hobart getting sorted for the colder months.

The exciting news is two new wool coat designs. Woohoo! One of which is lovely and girly and the other a little bit more boy. I have been in discussions with the wonderful tailor that I use to refine the designs for a couple of months and am so so pleased with the result. I hope you like.

One of my favourite things about both these coats is a generous cuff which, rolled down, should give you another winters wear before they are outgrown.

Another bonus is the awesome big pockets for keeping those hands cosy when the units are out in the weather.

I have also added a beautiful printed linen dress to my range which can be worn over tights in winter or as a light summer dress during the warmer months. How beautiful is this fabic?!

and of course, many more exciting things to happen in the coming months. keep an eagle eye on some of your favourite Hobart shops and you may just spy some Moon Unit.

After hearing a few things about the Cygnet market, I organised to have a stall down there a couple of months ago. The market (one of the double markets that run approximately once a month) was a great mix of locally grown produce and plants, nanna style craftiness, eats and high quality bric-a-brac bargain hunting. Now that is my kind of market!

A couple of really stand out things for me were the folk musicians- a group of local musicians filling time slots and raising money for charity, surprising how good each and every one of them sounded, and a stall selling upcycled glassware. These are seriously cool- old bottles cut off and smoothed to create drinking glasses and vases. We bought a set of ex-stubby glasses – just the right size and shape for a beer- funny that.

Another stand out was the old lady knitting behind her stall who said that she wouldn’t pay 2 cents for the music and they should be playing a bit of Abba instead.

Many a Saturday morning was whiled away with a stall set up, the newspaper, a coffee and a raspberry and white chocolate muffin from the Lyttelton Lounge. and yes, those cafes are sorely missed too.

Regardless of the outcome, it has been a success for me in that new connections have been forged, new talent has been uncovered and new friends are being made. Aaaaw…..

BUT..thanks to two forward thinking mums in my lovely parents group, all that has changed. When we met at the park a couple of weeks ago, their little ones were wearing waterproof pants. It seems so obvious but what a great solution. Just whip them off at the end of the play and put them back in your bag.

Needless to say, I went home and made up a pair for Josie out of raincoating material….and a few more pairs for he moon unit website. Every fine day this week we have been to the park or the beach. It really was a great discovery.
